An Overview of the Global Historical Climatology Network Temperature Database
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Global Historical Climatology Network version 2 temperature database was released in May 1997. This centuryscale dataset consists of monthly surface observations from ~7000 stations from around the world. This archive breaks considerable new ground in the field of global climate databases. The enhancements include 1) data for additional stations to improve regional-scale analyses, particularly in previously data-sparse areas; 2) the addition of maximum– minimum temperature data to provide climate information not available in mean temperature data alone; 3) detailed assessments of data quality to increase the confidence in research results; 4) rigorous and objective homogeneity adjustments to decrease the effect of nonclimatic factors on the time series; 5) detailed metadata (e.g., population, vegetation, topography) that allow more detailed analyses to be conducted; and 6) an infrastructure for updating the archive at regular intervals so that current climatic conditions can constantly be put into historical perspective. This paper describes these enhancements in detail. *Global Climate Laboratory, National Climatic Data Center, Asheville, North Carolina. An evaluation of the time of observation bias adjustment in the U.S. Historical Climatology Network
[1] The U.S. Historical Climatology Network (HCN) database contains statistical adjustments that address historical changes in observation time at each observing station in the network. A paper in 2002 suggested that these adjustments cause HCN temperature trends to be ''spuriously'' warm relative to other datasets for the United States. To test this hypothesis, this paper evaluates the reliabi...

Objective of this study is to determine whether there are significant changes in maximum temperature trends between the current (1981-2010) and future (2011-2099) periods. To this end, statistical downscaling is used to project future changes in the maximum temperatures according to A2 and B2 scenarios of HADCM3 in the 7 selected stations of Iran. The possibilities of an accelerating trend are ...
متن کاملEvaluating branched tetraether lipid-based palaeotemperature proxies in an urban, hyper-eutrophic polluted lake in South Africa
The branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (br-GDGTs) based methylation index of branched tetraethers/cyclisation ratio of branched tetraethers (MBT/CBT) proxy was applied for reconstructing the recent local changes in mean air temperature (MAT) in a sediment core collected from Lake Zeekoevlei. Lake Zeekoevlei is the largest freshwater lake in South Africa, and located close to Cape To...

High resolution information of climatic conditions is essential to many application in environmental sciences. Here we present the CHELSA algorithm to downscale temperature and precipitation estimates from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) climatic reanalysis interim (ERA-Interim) to a high resolution of 30 arc sec. The algorithm for temperature is based on a statist...
